Most financial advisors will tell you to keep three to six months of expenses in reserve. For a seasonal lawn care business, the right number is usually higher — closer to covering your slowest 60 to 90 day stretch in full, not just a generic monthly average.
A consulting firm with steady monthly revenue can get away with a smaller cushion. A lawn care business with a real winter slowdown or a mud-season dip needs enough reserve to cover payroll, insurance, and fixed costs through the stretch where revenue drops but overhead doesn’t.
Identify your lowest-revenue 60 to 90 day window from last year’s actuals
Add up fixed overhead for that same window — rent, insurance, salaried staff, loan payments
That total is your minimum reserve target, before adding any additional cushion for equipment breakdowns or emergencies
Your reserve belongs in a separate business savings account — not sitting in your operating checking account, where it’s too easy to treat as available cash for a tempting equipment purchase or an unplanned expense.
Set a fixed percentage of monthly net profit — even 5% to 10% — to move automatically into the reserve account. Small, consistent, and automatic beats “I’ll add to it when things slow down,” because things slowing down is exactly when you won’t want to.
Your reserve is not your growth fund. Using it to finance a new truck or a marketing push blurs the line between “money set aside for survival” and “money available for opportunity” — and the next slow season will remind you why that distinction matters.
Is three to six months of reserve enough for a lawn care business? For most seasonal operations, that’s a starting point, not a finish line. Your slowest 60 to 90 day window is usually the more accurate target.
Should my reserve fund include payroll for my whole team? Yes — payroll is typically the largest and least flexible expense during a slow stretch, so it belongs at the center of the calculation.
How fast should I build my reserve? There’s no universal timeline. What matters more than speed is consistency — a fixed percentage moved automatically every month, without exceptions.
